According to the *CDC, healthy students are better learners! Poor nutrition, lack of physical activity and an overall unhealthy lifestyle can lead to poor academic achievement in children. Studies have shown that healthy children get better grades, attend school more often and behave better in class.

immunization - Breaking news

You still have to get your kids vaccinated even if their California school goes online
The California Legislature in recent years has passed some of the tightest vaccine mandates in the country to increase the immunization rates in schools. In 2015, lawmakers approved Senate Bill 277 to exclude personal beliefs from the list of reasons parents can skip vaccinating their children.
Last year, Gov. Gavin Newsom signed follow-up measure Senate Bill 276 to increase oversight of doctors who issue five or more medical exemptions in a single year.  Despite the pandemic, laws still require students be up-to-date on their shots before starting school.
Before students are granted admission, even during distance learning,  schools are required to review immunization records.

Credentialed School Nurses are available to support students and families

Credentialed school nurses in the Mt. Diablo Unified School District work to complete State-mandated screenings for hearing, vision, and scoliosis. We notify parents of incomplete mandated requirements for immunization compliance, school entry physicals and a dental exam for all Kindergarten students.

Our school nurses review physician orders for medications in the schools. For students with medical issues, we obtain/write student health assessments upon request for IEP and 504's that have a medical basis.

Our school nurses provide consultation for communicable disease issues/outbreaks, and may review student attendance related to medical issues. We serve on the School Attendance and Review Board and provide representation at the Community Action Coalition (SARB & CAC) meetings.

School nurses have provided in-service education and consultation to school staff/students regarding chronic medical conditions.
