Independent Study Program Update - August 10, 2021

The deadline to apply for the District's Independent Study program was Aug. 5 in order to appropriately create classes and address staffing needs. If you are applying after the Aug. 5 date, placement in the Independent Study program will be based on the space currently available. Families interested in the program will be contacted by Horizons Staff as soon as space becomes available and their application is processed. Until that time, families are being directed to report to their school of attendance to begin the start of the school year or to contact their school site to discuss instructional options for their student until a space in Independent Study is confirmed.

The updated application for Independent Study (virtual learning) is located on the Horizons Home Study and Center for Independent Study websites:

Independent study options:

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District anticipates that all students will return to full time, in-person learning Fall of 2021, which begins August 12, 2021. However, students have the option of participating in independent study if their parent/guardian determines that the child’s health would be at risk by returning to in-person instruction.

Assembly Bill 130 also provided new guidance regarding synchronous instruction and daily live interaction for all students participating in independent study, both current and prospective. This required changes to our previous independent study program.

To help families navigate the different independent study programs and to provide more details on the models to be provided, Mt. Diablo Unified presented Information Sessions on July 26 and Aug. 3 The PowerPoint presentation in English is HERE. A Spanish translation of the presentation is HERE. A video recording of the information session is HERE. A Q & A including questions and answers shared during the presentation is HEREA Spanish translation of the Q & A is HERE. A video recording of the Aug. 3 information session is HERE.

The district sent confirmation of transfers via the email provided to Virtual Academy applicants on Friday, July 23.  Families were required to accept or decline the transfer, based on the model being offered, by August 5.

Horizons Home Study, Horizons Independent Study and Home & Hospital Instruction may still be available to families if your child is eligible to participate.
