MDUSD Bargaining Update: Tentative Agreement reached with MDEA on retiree benefits

The Mt. Diablo Unified School District (MDUSD) negotiation team met with the Mt. Diablo Educators Association (MDEA) team on October 5, 2021, for their fourth day of the Collective Bargaining Agreement negotiation sessions. Throughout the negotiation sessions, the District maintains the position that it is its responsibility and goal to continue to deliver a high-level educational experience for all students while also showing its employees, community members, and students they are valued. The District team is negotiating with these things in mind, as well as ensuring the District is fiscally responsible today and in the future. The teams reached a Tentative Agreement on Article 22 - Retirement Plans & Retiree Health/Dental Benefits.


The MDUSD team passed the following articles:


Article 5- Transfer

*Article 6- Class Size 

Article 8- Job Share Program

*Article 16-Employee Benefits

Article 22- Retirement Plans & Retiree Health/Dental Benefits (Reached Tentative Agreement). The District agreed to continue reimbursing medical benefits for the employee and spouse or one eligible dependent and to pay the costs of dental insurance to each employee and dependent for a maximum of 10 years or until the first day of the month in which the retiree reaches (or would have reached) age 65, whichever comes first. Due to rising benefits costs, the district had originally proposed paying only for coverage of employees after July 1, 2022.

The MDEA team passed the following articles:


Article 7- Work Year

Article 9- Hours

Article 11- Evaluation 

Article 23- Personnel Files

Article 25- Professional Development Advisory Committee

Article 26- Summer School


Articles 4 (Assignment/Reassignment), 13 (Peer Assistance and Review), and 30 (Department Chair/Elementary Grade Level Lead Selection Process) were not passed as the teams ran out of time for the day. 


While we are excited to have reached a tentative agreement with one article in this session, the MDUSD team is committed to reaching an agreement on all articles as the District firms up budget projections based on student enrollment and Average Daily Attendance. The District team hopes that accepting some of MDEAs proposed language will engender goodwill as both teams continue to look for areas where we can find common ground.


Both teams have agreed to continue bargaining on the following dates:

Thursday, October 28
